Calls for more support to tackle sexual violence

Sexual violence is a growing public health epidemic, according to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

It's calling for more State services to support victims, after nearly 14,000 contacts were made to its helpline last year.

The busy Dublin Rape Crisis Centre helpline staff fielding calls from people wanting to talk about their sexual violence experiences.

There has been an increase in the numbers calling, with almost 14,000 contacts last year, an increase on 2017.

They say the rise could be due to things like the Me Too movement.

The centre wants more services as sexual violence is a "growing problem for public health".

270 people contacted the DRCC each week - the majority of them women.

It will launch a new online health initiative later, which will start later this year.
