An Irish medical student stranded in Ukraine says conditions are tough, with no electricity or water in the hostel where she's been staying.

A rescue attempt to help Rachael Diyaolu flee from Sumy yesterday failed after volunteers were fired on by Russian forces.

Rachel who is a medical student says she was heartbroken when the rescue attempt failed.

But she's now on the move and hoping to get across the Polish border today.

Sumy is a city in north-eastern Ukraine, and the capital of Sumy Oblast.

There are at least 1,700 foreign students are trapped in the Northeastern city currently. This comes as the city has been shelled for the tenth day in a row with humanitarian corridors failing to materialise.

The student says she is currently on her way to Poland and hopes that they won't encounter any fighting on the way.
