Presidential Election To Be Held On October 26th

It's been confirmed that the date for the upcoming Presidential Election will be Friday, October 26th.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy confirmed that he was be signing the order to hold the election later today.

Once the writ is signed, anyone aiming to run for the role will have 28 days to get their name on the ballot, meaning nominations will close on the 26th of September.

So far, Michael D. Higgins has confirmed he will seek a second term in the Aras, while Sinn Fein have also said they'll put a candidate forward.

Local councils will meet over the next couple of weeks to make their nominations.

Those councillors who have held meetings have said businessman Gavin Duffy and Independent Senator Joan Freeman are likely to get nominations

While artist Kevin Sharkey and journalist Gemma O'Doherty also impressed a number of councils yesterday.
