It has been confirmed this afternoon that the country's nurses and midwives will strike for 24 hours on Wednesday January 30th.

Around 40,000 members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation are to go on a series of 24-hour work stoppages after 95 percent voted in favour of action.

If a row over pay isn't solved, there'll be more 24 hour stoppages on February 5th, 7th, 12th, 13th and 14th.

Other issues that have led to strike action include recruitment and retention problems, but the Government has repeatedly ruled out granting the 12% pay rise sought by nurses.
