Almost one in six Irish people feel they will never be able to buy their own home.

A new survey from The AA also found that this is more likely to affect younger people, with almost a third of people under the age of 35 agreeing that they'll never be in a position to purchase a property.

Over half of those said that despite their feelings owning a home is still a major life goal of theirs.

Barry Aldworth, from the AA, explains why young people feel it's out of their reach:

"It's a lack of supply, it's an issue with population density in certain parts of the country versus the available housing stock and it's an issue that most certainly isn't going to go away."
