Dublin Zoo has announced the latest edition to its family.

A male scimitar-horned oryx, a species which is classified as extinct in the wild, was born last Wednesday, July 25th.

The new calf weighs approximately 25kgs, and now brings the total herd at the Zoo to 7.

The oryx is part of the antelope family and was once widespread across the north of Africa, however over-hunting means it has gradually disappeared from the wild.

Commenting on the birth, team leader Helen Clarke-Bennet said, "We are so pleased to welcome our newest addition to the scimitar-horned oryx herd and recognise the impact this birth makes on the conservation efforts being made to protect this species.

"Both mother and calf are doing extremely well – we are delighted to report he was up and running about just one hour after birth!"
