UFC have confirmed the interim lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson which was due to take place at UFC 209 tomorrow night has been cancelled.

Earlier, the undefeated Nurmagomedov was hospitalised after falling ill, and on doctor's recomendations has not been cleared to fight.

The UFC have cited 'weight management medical issues' as the reason for The Eagle for falling ill.

The fight was being built up as potentially one of the most hotly anticipated lightweight fights of all time, with the 24-0 Russian facing Ferguson, who is off the back of a great win over former champion Rafael Dos Anjos.

In a statement to MMAFighting.comUFC have said the following:

"UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues. He was treated and has been discharged, UFC officials confirmed.

"The scheduled interim lightweight championship bout between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 has been cancelled on the doctor’s recommendation.

"UFC 209 emanates from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Saturday night live on Pay-Per-View at 10pm/7pm ETPT. Tyron Woodley takes on Stephen Thompson with his welterweight championship on the line in a rematch from their 2016 Fight of the Year contender at UFC 205."

This will be a huge blow to both fighters, as the winner would have been within touching distance of a mouthwatering unification bout with Conor McGregor.
