A new report suggests that Irish gym goers pay some of the highest rates in Europe for their membership.

The study by Deloitte, reveals that fitness fanatics pay an average of €49 a month in fees, behind only Switzerland at €66.

It's being put down to rental rates in Irish cities as the cost of retail space in this country is also one of the highest in Europe.

However, Conn McCluskey CEO of Active Ireland says that when all factors are taken into consideration the cost is relative to living costs.

"Most business owners is that gym owners have a high cost of doing business in Ireland, you take into account rents, insurance, salaries and also the vat rate of 9% which would be one of the highest across Europe for gym membership reality is we are around the European average for gym membership."
