Over 350,000 applications for passports have been made so far this year.

The government says more resources are being made available to the Passport Office.

They say it's to deal with record numbers of applicants and the increased demand for the service.

In January, February and March of this year - over 100,000 people signed up for new documents.

The Foreign Affairs Minister says the number of passport applications is 'off the charts so far in 2022.

The majority are processed quickly, but 37,000 applications are stuck awaiting more information from the applicant.

Minister Coveney says the sheer volume is like nothing he's ever seen before.

"Off the charts - in terms of anything else we've ever experienced in recent years," he said.

"We've had three months in a row now of record application numbers, as in, the highest ever."

"In any previous year, we hadn't gone over 100,000 in a month."
