Google is banning all advertisements related to the referendum on the 8th amendment.

It says the move will take effect over the next 24 hours.

In a statement, the search giant says: "Following our update around election integrity efforts globally, we have decided to pause all ads related to the Irish referendum on the Eighth Amendment."

It means ads related to the referendum at the end of this month will disappear off both Google and YouTube in the next day or so.

Facebook has already banned referendum-related ads being placed from organisations outside of Ireland.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan has welcomed the news, describing it as 'internationally significant'.

"Following on from Facebook’s announcement yesterday, this announcement by Google is further welcome news.

"Indeed, like Twitter, Google are going further than Facebook and banning all referendum related advertising."
