Gardaí Urging Motorists Not To Drink And Drive

Gardaí have reiterated the importance of never getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, and to never drive and drive.

10 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving on Christmas Day, and Gardaí say a further 12 drivers were arrested before 9am this morning.

A number of these drivers refused a breath sample and will now automatically face a 4 year ban.

Never drink and drive is the message from the Gardaí this St. Stephen's Day.

Sergeant Amanda Flood - from the Garda Crime Prevention Unit - has outlined a few key things for people going out tonight:

  • have a fully charged mobile phone
  • ensure those who drink too much get home safely
  • arrange a lift home
  • designated driver should park their car in a bright area
  • never leave valuables visible in the car
