Ireland's first technological university is getting the go-ahead by the government today.

The new university will be created by the merger of Dublin Institute of Technology, with the Institutes of Technology in Blanchardstown and Tallaght.

It will be called Technological University Dublin and will have a student population of almost 30,000.

President of the Union of Students in Ireland, Síona Cahill is welcoming the move but says students have to be put first in the merger;

"The local student's unions in Tallaght, Blanchardstown and in DIT absolutely have to be respected in this process moving forward to make sure that  students are absolutely central to this process."
