Children under 12 on summer holidays should not be left at home alone that's according to the ISPCC.

The ISPCC's counterpart in the UK made 849 referrals to police and social services last August due to concerns about children being left unsupervised.

Fiona Jennings of the Irish Child Protection Charity has this advice for parents;

"If its a thing that they do have to leave them at home to get a neighbour or a friend to drop by to make sure that the young person has the necessary contact numbers they need."

"To let the young person know when they could expect their parent or guardian back at."
