Beyonce's dad says she might not have been as successful if she had darker skin.
Matthew Knowles has told Ebony magazine he believes black singers with paler complexions are more likely to do well.
"When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids, and what do they all have in common?"
The Ebony magazine interviewer replied: "They’re all lighter skinned", with Mathew saying, "do you think that’s an accident?"
He also says when he was younger he was encouraged to date white women, and that he thought Beyonce's mum Tina was white when they first met.
