There's a possibility that the current smoking ban could be extended to outdoor areas that serve food.
The Health Minister Simon Harris is putting a proposal on the issue before the Cabinet today.
Calls for the ban to be extended were made by the former Health Minister James Reilly earlier this year.
It's his belief that diners should be able to enjoy their food outside without other people lighting up beside them.
