Simpsons Voice Actor Willing To "Step Aside" After Apu Controversy

Hank Azaria says he's ready to step aside from the character of Apu on The Simpsons.

He says he's "willing and happy" to stop voicing the character, or help him "transition into something new" following accusations that the show is stereotyping.

The voice actor told The Late Show's Stephen Colbert he would like to see Indian and South Asian people in the cartoon's writers room.

He says the recent controversy has opened his eyes.

Earlier this month, the writers of the show were criticised for their response to the controversy.

Marge and Lisa addressed the situation in a thinly veiled piece of dialogue in the 633rd episode "No Good Read Goes Unpunished".
