Fast fashion outlets are exploiting cotton farmers in the developing world, according to an environmental expert.

This follows Penneys announcing it will be using more sustainable cotton in its stores.

The organisation has promised that 100 per cent of the cotton in its clothes will be organic, recycled or sustainably sourced by 2027.

Over 275 thousand farmers from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India will supply the chain with more sustainably sourced cotton.

Environmental journalist, John Gibbons, says these items are coming from areas experiencing drought.

Almost 3 thousand litres of water is required to produce the cotton for one t-shirt, according to a environmental expert.
