The decision to leave calories off menus has been welcomed by an eating disorder charity.

The move, which was a key part of the National Obesity Strategy, is currently suspended and the Department of Health has "no plans" to resume work on it.

The Irish Heart Foundation have criticised the decision, saying it shows "inaction" on the plan.

But Communications Officer with BodyWise Ellen Jennings says it's positive news for those managing an eating disorder.

Jennings noted that environment adds to anxiety with those suffering from an eating disorder and listed calories could be triggering for someone with an eating disorder.

What is a calorie in food?
A calorie is a unit of energy. In nutrition, calories refer to the energy people get from the food and drink they consume, and the energy they use in physical activity. Calories are listed in the nutritional information on all food packaging.
Many weight loss programs centre around reducing the intake of calories.
