Four nights of spectacular projections, street entertainment and family fun from 23–26 October 2026

Drogheda’s historic streets will come alive with light, sound and ancient Irish legends this October as the Lú Festival of Light returns for its fifth year. From Friday 23 to Monday 26 October, spectacular projections will transform the town’s landmark buildings into giant storytelling canvases, alongside a lively programme of street entertainment and family activities.

Inspired by the Celtic Calendar, the changing seasons and the traditions of harvest and Samhain, this year’s festival invites audiences into a world of heroes, powerful gods and epic battles. Stories include Lugh’s legendary clash with Balor, the Dagda and his magical Cauldron of Plenty, and Brigid, whose story connects Ireland’s ancient mythology with its enduring traditions.

Through a combination of animated projections, music and sound, these stories are told across some of Drogheda’s best-loved heritage buildings. Along with the projections, visitors can enjoy fire performers, live music, colourful street performers, bringing energy and excitement to the streets throughout the festival.

The festival begins on Friday 23 October at approximately 6.15pm, as darkness falls, with the spectacular Drogheda Credit Union Spooks Parade. Produced by Droichead Arts Centre and sponsored by Drogheda Credit Union, this community arts celebration will bring the festival to life with music, colour, light and energy.

Local businesses, community groups and creatives are also joining the festivities, with themed events and activities including clay-making workshops, live music, escape rooms and pumpkin patch experiences.

The main projection locations are St Peter’s Church on West Street which will become an autumnal gateway illuminated with vines and embers that will climb the iconic church and turn into the Harvest and then Samhain accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack that makes viewers feel that the church is actually coming alive; the Old Abbey will tell the stories of Lugh and Balor, the battles between light and dark and the changing of the season. Gateway to Drogheda, St Laurence’s Gate will come alive the with the stories of Dagda and Brigid. There will also be additional festival experiences at the Methodist Church, Highlanes Gallery andScotch Hall Shopping Centre.

The popular Cottage Market also returns to the Dominican Church on Dominic Street, bringing together local crafters, makers and artisan food traders. Young visitors will have their own chance to be part of the spectacle, with the return of the colouring competition that allows children to see their artwork projected onto St Peter’s Church between shows.
