Two people are being held by Gardai on suspicion of murdering the infant at the centre of the Kerry Babies case.

The two, a man in his 60's and woman in her 50's are being held at Garda Stations in the south of the country.

The body of an infant, who became known as Baby John, was found with multiple stab wounds on White Strand beach in Caherciveen almost 40 years ago.

This historical photo was taken in 1985. It shows Detective Sergeant Gerry O'Carroll (on the right).

This was taken before he took to the witness box on the last day of evidence at Joanne Hayes' tribunal. Joanne was wrongly accused of murder.

Wrongly Accused

Gardaí have made numerous appeals in recent years insisting there are still members of the public with important information regarding his death.

A fresh investigation was opened at the beginning of 2018 following a Garda apology to Kerry woman Joanne Hayes, who had been wrongly accused of the murder.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s who were arrested last night on suspicion of murder are being detained at Listowel and Castleisland Garda Stations.

Gardaí are describing these arrests as a significant development in the investigation in an effort to establish the truth surrounding the death of Baby John.
