The RSA has double-downed on its commitment to reduce the wait time for driving tests to 10 weeks by September.
That's despite making the same promise over a year ago.
The Road Safety Authority's top team was quizzed about its new 'Action Plan to Alleviate Backlog' at the Oireachtas Transport Committee today.
Among the measures included to ensure it hits that 10 weeks mark are boosting the number of testers from 153 in May to 200 by September by streamlining the training programme for testers, and extending testing hours from 7.25am to 7pm each day, where possible.
Chief Operating Officer, Brendan Walsh says they also want to make the most of weekends and bank holidays:
"Our staff delivered, on the weekend of the Bank Holiday, over a thousand tests delivered through overtime. Of which 700 were delivered on the Bank Holiday Monday itself."
"We've opened up testing slots for the Bank Holdiay Monday in August and we're continuing to work Saturdays."
NCT Wait Times
CEO Sam Waide also gave an update on NCT wait times:
"As of last week the national average waiting time was 14 days, over the past month the service has been below the service level average of 12 days on occasions, and the service is expected to achieve the 12 days by the end of June."
There are plans to drive that down further with the addition of two new NCT centres in Drogheda and Sandyford in Dublin in the next year, but specific opening dates have yet to be announced.
