The first trams will be tested on the new Luas line in the city this weekend.

It's hoped the new route will bring an extra 10 million people into the capital each year.

The tram line connecting the north of the city to the south will be tested for the first time this Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June.

On Saturday, the test runs will consist of two trams moving slowly between St. Stephen's Green, College Green and over to O'Connell St. They'll be taking place from around 7am to midday.

On Sunday, the testing will take place during the same times on the line between Broadstone and Cabra.

Officials are urging the public to keep a safe distance from the trams while they're being tested over the weekend.

The news that the line is ready to undergo testing is being welcomed by retailers.

"Businesses can’t wait to see this much-needed transport system passing by their premises" said Richard Guiney, CEO DublinTown .

"We look forward to getting a glimpse of how the new system will look and work during these test runs. It’s an exciting time for the city".
