The Taoiseach has said the opposition is "simply wrong" in saying the State won't have ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital.

Micheál Martin says the 299 year lease approved by Cabinet this morning amounts to effective ownership.

However, the Government won't oppose a Sinn Féin motion in the Dáil tonight calling for the hospital to be fully publicly owned.

The decision not to oppose came as backbencher Neasa Hourigan made it clear she would vote against the Government.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin believes concern about the ownership of the site is misplaced: the Taoiseach reiterated the point that a 300 year lease at a ''tenner'' a week is ownership and opposition that allege otherwise are simply ''wrong''.
