Large gatherings indoors are one of the reasons behind growing Covid-19 case numbers in Limerick.

That's according to the Public Health Board MidWest.

The board has confirmed 272 new cases over the past 8 days, 259 of which were in County Limerick.

Director Warns Of 'Very Troubling Position' Ahead:

Dr Mai Mannix, Director of Public Health Mid-West, said:

"We have not seen this level of infection in the community since early March, which is a very worrying trend."

"If daily cases continue at this rate, coupled with the health service's coping with the sinister cyber attack, we will find ourselves in a very troubling position."

Local Tracing Teams Are Tracking Lots Of Outbreaks

Limerick journalist David Raleigh says the local tracing team are following over 20 school and workplace outbreaks:

"This high risk social activity is also causing onward transmission into schools and into workplaces."

"For example, the Public Health Midwest contact tracing team here in Limerick is investigating more than 20 school situations and more than 20 workplace situations."

"Most of them are here in Limerick City or County."
