The ban on pubs opening on Good Friday has been lifted, after the Dáil approved the measure this afternoon.

President Michael D. Higgins is expected to sign it into law before Good Friday this year.

That means alcohol can be sold this Good Friday for the first time in more than 90 years.

The Chief executive of Vintners' Federation of Ireland Padraig Cribben has welcomed the removal of the ban saying "We've been campaigning for this for some time. We don't think the world is going to turn on it's head just because of this. It's a sensible move."

However, Independent Senator David Norris is against the move "With regard to Good Friday - we're still a Christian country and this is the most solemn day in the Christian calendar. People who want to drink can buy their drink in the off licence and they can have it at home."
