Pope Francis has officially arrived in Ireland for the first papal visit in almost 40 years.

The Pope landed in Dublin Airport just before 10.30am this morning.

More than 700 thousand people are expected to come out to see the Pontiff over the next two days.

There are significant traffic restrictions in place today near the sites Pope Francis will visit and the generalĀ advice is to leave the car at home and use public transport.

The Pope has a busy day ahead of himself.

He'll travel along O'Connell Street in the Popemobile today before crossing the Liffey, going onto College Green - and then along Dame Street towards Christchurch before finishing up at the Capuchin day centre near Smithfield.

The quays as well as Dame Street, O'Connell Street and Church Street will be closed to all cars between 1 o'clock and 6 this evening.

Dublin Bus is operating a normal schedule but with restrictions on some routes - there'll also be diversions on Bus Eireann routes to and from Dublin.

On the Luas, there's no service between Dawson and Parnell from 10:30 to 5 o'clock on the Green Line.

While on the Red Line, trams won't run between Busaras and the Four Courts from 3:15 until 5.

Irish Rail will be operating extra trains - but booking is essential for anyone using Intercity travel.

Later this evening, restrictions will also be in place on roads around Croke Park as 70,000 people make their way to the stadium for the Festival of Families.
