One Man Arrested After Two Gardaí Were Shot In West Dublin Last Night

Two gardaí are being treated in hospital after being shot in west Dublin.

It happened in Whitechapel Grove in Blanchardstown last night.

The officers were struck in the hand and leg - injuries which are said to be non-life threatening.

The incident led to a standoff and there was a media blackout for several hours.

Taoiseach and Garda Commissioner "Shocked" By Incident

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he was shocked and deeply concerned by the incident.

Meanwhile Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has commended the officers involved for bringing the incident to a successful conclusion.

While Justice Minister Heather Humphreys says the incident's a reminder of the dangers officers face each day.

This was echoed by local Sinn Fein TD, Paul Donnelly, who says the shooting is "absolutely shocking":

"It's something that every member of their families worry about when their gardaí family members go out to to the job."

"It's totally unacceptable and it should never have happened," he said.

One man was arrested and is being held at Blanchardstown Garda Station.
