Nightclub opening hours are set to get an extension under plans by the Justice Minister, Helen McEntee.

Currently, they have to close at 2:30 am but the aim is to make nightlife in Ireland more like Berlin, rather than Ballina.

Venues that want to stay open until 6 am will have to apply to the courts for a license and will have to stop serving alcohol by 5 am, however, the dancing can continue until closing time!

Objections to licenses will be allowed from local authorities, the HSE, the local community and An Garda Síochána.

Clubs will have to get CCTV and all staff will need to be registered with the Private Security Authority.

Pubs will also get some longer opening hours during the week.

They will be able to trade between 10:30 am and 12:30 seven days a week. That's a change from the current closing time of 11:30 pm Monday to Friday.

The Minister for Justice hopes the legislation will be passed next year.
