A new broadcasting charge is being mooted to replace the current TV Licence.

A Dail report has recommended the so called 'laptop levy' which means households would no longer have to own a TV set in order to be charged.

The Irish Independent is also reporting that the fee could increase from €160 for the current TV Licence to €175 for the new one.

The fee is designed to fund Irish broadcasters, as fewer people own traditional TV sets.

Ireland currently has the highest licence fee evasion rate in Europe, costing around €40 million a year.
