Met Eireann has issued a status RED snow and ice warning ahead of the arrival of Storm Emma.

The Forecaster says we can expect snow showers 'during today and again tonight with further accumulations. Total snowfall up to midday Thursday may reach 25cm.'

The red warning, which has been issued for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath and came into affect from 5am this morning until 12 midday tomorrow (Thursday).

According to Met Eireann, a status red alert 'implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions.'

Many schools in the affected red alert counties are expected to close.
