A 33-year-old man has been jailed for twelve years for killing his father.

David Fortune, of Rutland Grove, Crumlin, Dublin, stabbed him while he was watching the All-Ireland Hurling Final in August 2018.

By the time he stabbed his father, David Fortune had been drinking and taking drugs with a friend and other family members for two days.

His father, Gerry, didn’t take part.

However he was aware they were socialising in a shed in his back garden.

While he was watching Galway and Limerick play out the 2018 All-Ireland Hurling Final, David stormed into the house after getting involved in a row outside.

Gerry tried to calm him down, but to no avail.

He stabbed him once in the neck before jumping out the front window.

Then he dragged a woman out of her car and drove it at speed to a nearby hospital.

That's where he told staff his father had tried to kill him.

He went on trial for murder but a plea to manslaughter was accepted mid-trial.

He was handed a 13-year prison sentence today with the final year suspended
