A 42-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his brother and the attempted murder of his father in County Cork on Saturday.

John Murphy of Seaview Avenue, Carrigaline, appeared before a sitting of Cork District Court this morning.

Detective Garda Ian Breen told the court he charged John Murphy with the murder of his brother 27-year-old Shane Murphy and the attempted murder of his father, 75-year-old 'Weeshie' Murphy, at a house in Carrigaline in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Murphy made no reply when the charges were put to him.

John Murphy was also charged with two lesser charges.

Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer said he would not be applying for bail on those charges.

But he would be making an application to the High Court for bail in respect to the murder charge.

The Judge remanded Murphy in custody until next Monday when he will appear again via video link.

He further ordered that Murphy receive any necessary medical treatment while in custody.
