The Taoiseach has come under fire for suggesting that people looking to buy a home should ask their parents for money in order to put down a deposit.

At Leader's Questions yesterday, Leo Varadkar was quizzed on the affordability of homes right now, and said there are many ways for people to save money.

Leo told the Dáil "Sometimes people go abroad for a period and they get the money or they get money from their parents as lots of us did." He added "They get money through other loans, sometimes they may stay at home for a period and raise the money in that way."

Plenty of folks on twitter hit back at what they felt was an unrealistic approach to the situation by the Taoiseach:

Will you lend me a deposit for a house?</p>&mdash; Alison Spittle (@AlisonSpittle) <a href="https://twitter.com/AlisonSpittle/status/956119211440517120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 24, 2018</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Must ask parents for a house deposit.&quot;Mam, you know that €30,000 you keep under your bed. I need it.&quot; Reminiscent of <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/derrygirls?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#derrygirls</a> when Erin asks for her trust fund. Her mam says: &quot;Account number, 654321, password, catch yourself on!” Catch yourself on Leo! <a href="https://t.co/QQNb9YALgQ">https://t.co/QQNb9YALgQ</a></p>&mdash; Marie Duffy (@Donegalabu) <a href="https://twitter.com/Donegalabu/status/956116699182452736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 24, 2018</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Not everyone&#39;s parents can afford to sign a cheque for a house deposit. The Taoiseach needs to get real. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Our lovely Taoiseach with another asshole comment yesterday it seems. Get a loan from the bank of Mam and Dad for your house deposit. You are out of touch, sir. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Varadkar?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Varadkar</a></p>&mdash; Christy B (@ChristyB306) <a href="https://twitter.com/ChristyB306/status/956079783154200576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 24, 2018</a></blockquote>

He defended his comments by saying "It's always been the case that in order to buy your own home that you have to be able to raise a deposit with the exception of one period - during the boom when we had 100% loans. I wouldn't like us to get back to 100% loans because we know where that led us".
