Leaving Cert students are being encouraged to use today as a time to relax ahead of the start of the exams tomorrow.

For the first time, many students have a choice of taking a calculated grade or sitting the written exam.

Usually every Leaving Cert student in the country would be preparing for English Paper 1 tomorrow.

However some won't have to sit it if they don't want to.

They can accept an accredited grade instead.

Leaving Cert student Callum Heddermann is one of those NOT sitting English tomorrow.

However he will be taking 5 of his 7 subjects:

"Well you never know what might happen on the day."

"You could do much better, or much worse."

"It's about giving yourself that opportunity to have a go at it."

"If you look back in ten years time, and you didn't get your course or whatever, at least then you can say, I gave myself the best shot I could."

Use Today To Relax And Prepare Mentally

Guidance Counsellor at Tyndall College Carlow, Gemma Lawlor is encouraging students to use today to make sure they're prepared physically and emotionally.

Gemma's asking students not to cram everything now:

"You have to think in terms of, it's a marathon race you've to run tomorrow."

"So you wouldn't run a marathon tonight in preparation for that."

"You'd rest, build up your carbs and energy, so that you can give your best during the actual exam time."

Schools will use more classrooms as exam centres this year.

So that's in order to comply with public health guidance and social distancing
