The Tánaiste has said the Government is moving to ensure the tickets for the upcoming Republic of Ireland game at the Aviva can't be sold for above face value.

It's after tickets for the upcoming sold out match against Portugal appeared on re-selling websites at three times the price.

Legislation which came into effect in July, allows for organisations to designate venues or individual events to stop tickets being sold above face value.

The FAI applied to have the game protected under the legislation yesterday but Leo Varadkar says it will take a number of days to do.

He says in future large sporting events and gigs need to be protected from touting from the get go:

"The lesson from the Ireland-Portugal experience is that the Department needs to take a more proactive approach on this.

"So we're actively approaching venues like the Aviva, we're going to talk to the big sporting bodies, the big concert promoters.

"Thinking ahead to concerts that are happening in November, the rugby internationals, other matches that are coming up as well and taking a more proactive approach into the future."
