Karl Lagerfeld has died aged 85.

He passed away in Paris this morning.

The news comes after the iconic fashion designer missed two of Chanel's haute coture shows in January.

Chanel released a statement at the time say Lagerfeld was feeling 'tired'.

The fashion world have taken to social media to pay their respects.

Karl Lagerfeld's career

Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1933.

After winning a design competition in 1955 he was hired as Pierre Balmain's assistant.

Following three years at Balmain he began working for Jean Patou.

There he designed two haute couture collections a year for five years.

The first was shown in 1958 and was poorly received. One journalist reported booing at the event.

The dresses were deemed too short with low cut backs, but that didn't stop him.

Lagerfeld's skirts for a spring 1960 collection were the shortest shown that season in Paris.

Next he moved on to designing for Roman couture house Tiziani.

His clothes were really popular with celebrities and Elizabeth Taylor was a huge fan on the label.

In 1964 he started freelancing for French fashion house Chloé and from 1965 he worked for Fendi.

In 1970 he released his first line for Curiel. It was described as having "drippy drapey elegance" fit for a "1930s cinema queen."

He's since worked with Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Mariah Carey.

Among his many other projects, collaborations and fashion lines he also photographed for Chanel, Fendi, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue.
