The Health Minister says just one fully vaccinated person has suffered a so-called breakthrough Covid infection that put them in ICU in recent months.

Stephen Donnelly says 124 cases needed treatment in intensive care since April.

However just one person was fully vaccinated, something the Minister says heightens the importance of the second dose.

Minister Donnelly outlines the figures:

"So we've looked at the number of people going into Intensive Care in April, May and June."

"There's been 124 cases in total."

"The vast majority of those didn't have any vaccine protection."

"But most encouragingly, only one of those cases was a so-called breakthrough infection."

"That was someone who was fully vaccinated plus 14 days after their second dose."

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has reported an additional 576 Covid cases today.

There are 58 patients with the disease in hospital, an increase of 6 on yesterday's figure.

While the number of people receiving treatment in ICU has remained at 16.
