"It Was A Special Day, A Crazy Day" - Couple Got Married At Dublin Airport Today

A French couple have gotten married in Dublin Airport today.

Nico and Justine Bühler had originally planned to get married in County Meath in April but lockdown delayed that.

The pair contacted DAA on Tuesday to request permission to get married outside.

Nico says they asked for a patch of land outside the Check-In area.

Airport officials offered them a place in the gardens, but the rain forced them into the Old Central Terminal building.

Nico says it was a special day, even if there was torrential rain:

"We were looking for one place to go, and we thought of the airport, they always have to be open right?"

"So we got onto them and asked for just one square metre of space."

He says the airport's Head of External Communications, Siobhan O'Donnell was happy to help.

"Siobhan just made all of that happen."

Siobhan herself says "I was touched by Nico’s story and explored the possibility of having the ceremony outside the airport’s iconic 1940s original terminal building"

It Was A 'Crazy Day'

Nico says airport staff went above and beyond for their special day.

"They welcomed us with champagne with our witnesses."

"So they drove us to the terminal too."

"We were supposed to do it outside but it rained today, so they moved everything inside."

Siobhan agreed, the weather was dreadful.

"The initial plan was to have the wedding there in front of the lovely gardens and building."

"However as the weather was just awful today we had it in the foyer of the building."

Nico admitted it wasn't not what they'd planned but it was a 'crazy day'

"There were just six of us, Justine and I, two witnesses with the Solemniser and Justine's sister."

"We went inside the building and had our ceremony there, but Siobhan also organised the firefighters to come and give us a welcome."

Marie Claire Contino officiated the wedding.

The pair said time was running out because their marriage paperwork was due to expire.

"The plan at the beginning was to get married in April in Meath, in Boyne Hill."

He says lockdown scuppered that plan.

However the couple are hoping to have a proper celebration when it's safe to do so.

"We're still planning to have a party there, we're still planning to have all the family coming over."

Nico says their marriage papers are expiring at the end of this month.

"We had to get married now, because if we didn't then our paperwork and administrative stuff would have been void."

"Today's actually our six year anniversary too so it was a special day to do it."

He concluded, "Yeah... That was a crazy day."
