Ireland's detected its first case of the Omicron variant.

Eight samples were sent for testing, and one case of the much-mutated strain has been detected.

The case is linked to travel to a country in southern Africa.

We Know Enough To Be Concerned

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says we know enough about the variant to be concerned:

"We do not know all about this variant, but we know enough to be concerned."

"And we know from our experience with the Delta variant it is a race against time."

"Therefore, till we know what's going on - and this will take 2 to 3 weeks, the Scientists tell us."

"We have to do everything possible to make the best out of the time we have till we have certainty."
