Instagram has announced it will make new under-16's accounts private by default to create a safer experience for teens.

Now only approved followers can see posts and leave a like or comment.

While existing account holders will be sent a notification "highlighting the benefits" of switching to private.

It follows an announcement from TikTok that they're making 13's to 16 year old's accounts automatically private.

Instagram also announced they will be making a separate app targeted at children.

Alex Cooney, CEO & Co-Founder of CyberSafeKids says 'Instagram for kids' is a dubious prospect:

"Social Media platforms aren't necessarily where children should be, you know there's lots of great things to explore online. Unfortunately what we're seeing is lots of underage kids are lying about their age and gaining access to sometimes inappropriate content."
