Health experts are urging young people to stay away from large house parties this weekend.

There are reports of large gatherings being organised to coincide with the cancelled Longitude festival.

The music festival, which would have brought acts like Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator and also A$AP Rocky to Dublin.

Parents are being asked to be vigilant and stop their teenagers from going to parties.

Miriam Taber from Drinkaware says people need to realise the dangers of large gatherings:

“We have been made aware of potential house parties that are planned this weekend that happen to coincide with a really popular festival in Dublin, Longitude,”.

“We are really urging parents to stay vigilant and if they hear about a planned event, to caution their young people against attending and share the information with other parents so they can make informed decisions.”

Research by Behaviour & Attitudes in the 30-day period prior to 24th April 2020 found that 82% of under 25s have cited social reasons as motivations for their drinking during lockdown compared to 49% national average.

The appeal from Drinkaware comes as former Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, recently expressed concern over the worrying trend in the number of new cases of Covid-19 among younger people in Ireland.
