The ESB say customers should expect power cuts across the country as Hurricane Ophelia closes in.

They're asking people to be prepared for any outages and to stay away from fallen cables that may have broken due to the high winds.

For a full list of faults check out powercheck.ie or download the PowerCheck App for your iPhone or Android device.

If your area is not on the map, phone 1850 372 999 to report it or you can report it online here

Crews from ESB will be dispatched to areas without electricity supply but they are reminding everyone to be on high alert and to expect power cuts. Here's their top tips to prepare for an outage in your home:

  • Have plenty of food and water available
  • Have torches with spare batteries available
  • Make sure your phone is charged and, if possible, have a phone charger at hand for your car
  • Please check that elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours are prepared to be without electricity
  • If you have electric gates, please check you know how to work them manually

In the event of a power cut, you're advised to do the following:

  • Turn off electric cookers, ovens, irons, etc. if your electricity supply is lost
  • Leave a light switched on so you know when power has been restored
  • Take extra care if using candles, oil lamps or other naked flames
  • Test smoke alarms with fresh batteries
  • Ensure adequate ventilation if using gas heaters

If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are live and can be extremely hazardous.

They're urging people to report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1850 372 999.
