Health Officials Report 407 More Covid Cases As Mid West Appeal Made

The Department of Health has confirmed a further 407 Covid-19 cases.

There are 93 people in hospital with the virus, that's up four on yesterday.

The number of patients in ICU has not changed, it's 34.

Over 740 Covid Cases In Limerick Over 2 Weeks

Dr Mai Mannix is the Director of Public Health in the Mid West.

She says the numbers in Limerick are worrying:

"Between May 16 and May 31 we've had over 740 Covid cases in Limerick."

"In other parts of the Mid West, numbers are low, in Clare and North Tipperary."

"Our situation sparked off really with multiple community outbreaks connected to high risk activity indoors."

"So house parties, indoor gatherings, family and household events, visits, multi-household visists."

However Dr. Mannix says, "we've also had some workplace outbreaks and some outbreaks in school settings too."

Additionally, she says the vast majority of the cases are 40s, 30s or younger.

ISAG Is Worried About Indian Variant

Meanwhile the Government could have to impose another significant bout of restrictions.

That's to stop the Indian variant becoming dominant here, according to a member of the Independent Scientific Advocacy Group.

He says up to 2,000 more people may die if this happens.

It comes as restrictions are set to ease further over the coming months, including the return of outdoor dining next week.

Immunology Professor Dr Tomás Ryan says the presence of the Indian variant of covid-19 in Ireland needs to be considered:
