A popular Irish insult apparently was first used in the US.

The term 'Gobsh**e' is normally associated with Ireland.

While television programmes like Father Ted brought it to international ears.

However it turns out we aren't the only ones to use the term.

Susie Dent is a lexicographer and longtime Dictionary Corner resident on Channel 4's Countdown.

She outlines the history of 'Gobsh**e'

"The first example is in the Navy, the US Navy for an enlisted sailor."

"That's 1910."

"So then 30 years later it appears in Irish-English."

"To meanĀ A foolish or incompetent person who talks nonsense and speaks incessantly."

"So you (Irish people) definitely made it popular, but I'm afraid it was in the US Navy first."
