A batch of 35,000 AstraZeneca vaccines is due to arrive in Ireland next week.

Meanwhile the Government is preparing to sign off on a deal to buy an extra 875,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

So that would take the country's total from the firm to over 1.7 million.

Latest figures show just under 200,000 doses of a Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the Republic.

Head of the vaccination taskforce is Professor Brian MacCraith says there will be a ramp up of the roll-out in the next couple of months:

"We know that the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive some day next week."

"So we don't have a confirmed final day, but some time in the early to middle of next week it'll come."

"Our plan is, like the other vaccines, to start rolling those out almost as soon as they arrive."

"We would bring them to our cold chain headquarters."

"All the preparation will be in place, and then we'll start rolling them out."

"It's a very attractive vaccine as you know, it's particularly suited to use in the community."

AstraZeneca Delivery Due Soon

Stephen Donnelly previously said the delivery is due "the week of February 8th," but couldn't give a specific date.

While the inoculation has been described as a 'gamechanger' numerous times by the Government because it can be stored in regular fridges.

Latest figures show, more than 40,000 people have now received a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna inoculations.

Professor Brian MacCraith says more people will benefit from this delivery."

"I suspect quarter two, just from our initial projections, looks like it may be the big quarter."

"But no one is going to make a prediction at this stage."

"If we stick to our principle, as we have done, of administering vaccines as soon as they arrive."

"Then you could be talking about administering up to 250,000 doses per week."
