The Government is allocating €15 million to 170 schools to improve walking and cycling facilities for kids.

The funding forms part of the government's new Safe Routes to School programme.

It announced the scheme earlier this year.

Builders are due to start work in the next couple of weeks.

It includes projects like new cycle lanes, upgraded footpaths and parking facilities.

Junior Minister Wants "A Template"

Junior Transport Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, says more urban schools are included in the initial phase of the programme:

"So there's 135 urban schools we have selected, and 35 rural schools."

"We want to have a template and a model, particularly in the rural areas."

"So many of these schools would be on 80km/h roads, so we want to find solutions for those rural schools and replicate them right across the country."
