Gov Rejects Funding Application For Whitewater Rafting Facility In Dublin

The Government has refused funding for a controversial white water rafting facility.

The facility, which is planned to be built at George's Quay in Dublin City Centre, is expected to cost over 25 million.

Dublin City Council looked for it to be part funded by the government.

But the Minister for Local Government Darragh O'Brien rejected the application.

The news comes despite the council inviting expressions of interest earlier this year, to build the facility at Georges Dock.

Senator Marie Sherlock is relieved at the news.

"Ultimately this started put as a €12milion project and now that's more than double to 25 million."

While Senator Sherlock says the government needs to support sport and recreational spaces, the facility isn't the best option.

"We  need to look at the housing need and the lack of money being spent by central Government into directly building houses," she said.
