Farmers are urging MEPs to ban vegan products from being called steak, burgers and sausages.

The Irish Farmers Association says these words should be connected with meat products only.

It claims plant-based food is deliberately disguised as something it's not.

A vote will take place this week in the European Parliament.

So that's on the wording used for meat and dairy substitutes.

The IFA also wants a ban on words like milk, cheese and butter.

That's for products which don't exclusively contain dairy.

IFA President Calls The Labels "Misleading"

While the IFA President, Tim Cullinane, says the labels are damaging farmers' livelihoods:

"It's what we produce, the natural products we produce from the grass that's growing in the field."

"So we then derive them into meat and dairy products."

"People have been consuming these for generations."

"It's misleading how we describe meat and dairy products."

"Products which have been produced for generations by farmers."
