Tourists heading across Europe this week are being warned that temperatures are expected to soar to record-breaking levels across many counties, particularly in the South West.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high forties and even 50 degrees in parts of Portugal, Spain and southwest France.

Holidaymakers are being advised to prepare for the extreme heat by drinking lots of water and staying inside from noon until 3 pm as that's when the suns rays are most strongest.

Temperatures are expected to reach their peak at the weekend, with very hot weather building up due to hot air moving up from North Africa.

Inland parts of the Algarve are expected to see the highest temperatures, with forecasters predicting highs of 48 degrees or more.

Spain's previous record high is 47.3°C and Portugal's is 47.4°C.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann are forecasting another long spell of dry and sunny weather for Ireland with highs between 20 and 26 degrees predicted for Friday and across the weekend.
