Electric Picnic waste

An environmental group says Electric Picnic isn't doing enough to reduce the mountain of rubbish at the festival.

Earlier this month, event organiser Melvin Benn appealed to people to bring their tents home this year -- and to bring reusable bottles.

But there are calls for more efforts to be made by management, including a tent deposit scheme.

Mindy O'Brien from Voice Ireland says the response so far won't change much.

"We need to be careful not to greenwash their actions and say 'yes we've done this, this and this' but it still doesn't solve the problem of a disposable society," she said.

She added that the waste left at Electric Picnic campsites is a symptom of our throwaway culture.

"It's so condensed and there's so many people in one place that the waste is so visible -- [but] we're generating that waste every day and people don't see it because you put it on the kerb and it's gone."
